Samenvatting
This thesis consists of two parts. In Part I we will derive the so-called divergence relations (corresponding to Noether’s first theorem) and identities (corresponding to Noether’s second theorem). In order to do this we will need some preliminaries about the calculus of variations and transformation groups. In Part II we will consider some physical applications of Emmy Noether’s theorems, which include applications in classical mechanics, scalar electrodynamics and the theory of general relativity. In each example our point of departure will be the action functional which describes a certain physical system. In other words, we will always consider the action functional of the physical system as a given. Using Emmy Noether’s theorems, we will then derive conservation laws and/or identities.
With my thesis I hope to inform you about the content of Emmy Noether’s theorems and some of its applications in physics. I hope to convince you about the importance and elegance of Emmy Noether’s theorems, if you were not convinced already.
