Many definitions of a sublime experience incorporate a notion of fear. What kind of fear is this and by what systems, situations or memories is it triggered? Has it changed over time, or are certain things timeless? In this article these questions are being explored with regard to the sublime experience in a church. It comes together in an analysis of today's fears, uncovering the impact of secularization in the Netherlands. Eventually images made to bring to surface today's fears are presented.
