Samenvatting
Harking back to the first games in Athens, in ancient Rome, this project aims to take what is a burning
symbol of hope and perseverance and capture it, freezing it in a poignant oxymoron between the fire
and the ice upon which the winter games takes place. The first winter games were hosted in 1924 in
Chamonix, France. Where only six sports were part of: skiing, hockey, speedskating, figure skating,
bobsleigh and curling. The inspiration for the torch of Beijing in 2022, with the name Flying, honors
the Cauldron torch from the 2008 Olympic summer games. Beijing is the first city that will host both
the summer and winter games. This is a historical event. The spiral design of the torch resembles the
ribbon. The red line on the body resembles the great wall, which is iconic for China. It also resembles
the skiing course at the games. The torch reflects the pursuit of light, peace and excellence where people
strive for. For the torch of 2022 the same color combination is used as for the torch in 2008, red and
silver, which is a metaphor for fire and ice. The torch will bring ‘light and warmth to the world of snow
and ice.’ By choosing the design of the Flying torch of the Olympic winter games in 2022 as an
inspiration for the ice sculpture, we want to honor this historic event which is going to take place in
February of 2022. The torch is made of two shells. Both shells are made from ice but constructed in a
different way. In order to ensure both shells cooperate structurally they are connected by the steps of the staircase and various icicles functioning as beams. Both shells are 25 cm thick. The structure was
analyzed using the Rhino Grasshopper plugin Karamba. This software is used as the model was made
in Grasshopper and Karamba has the possibility to analyze true three-dimensional shells (non-flat
shells). The connections between all elements are modelled as fixed as it is expected that it is not possible
to create hinged connections using ice. The icicle beams are modelled as circular solid 5cm thick
sections. Both shells are modelled as 25 cm thick shells. With this design we received the second price
in an international competition about ice sculptures.
