Samenvatting

The effect of bandwidth and luminance contrast of video display units (VDUs) on the perceptual quality of alphanumeric information was evaluated. High-quality print stimuli with varying luminance contrast served as a reference and were mixed with the VDU stimuli. Scaled visual comfort, search velocity. saccadic length and fIxation duration during letter search were the dependent variables. Luminance contrast was the independent variable, bandwidth was the parameter. Up to a certain critical value, the effects of increasing bandwidth on all measured variables arc highly correlated. However, beyond this value the ef[ect on the objective variables levels off while, on the other hand, visual comfort is influenced up to the val ue equivalent to the resolution of the eye. Apparently, quality judgement can still improve on the basis of appreciation, allhough performance has reached its ceiling and information intake does not improve anymore. The data obtained with the highest effective bandwidth do not differ significantly from those obtained with the print reference.
