The outstanding complexation abilities of terpyridine ligands have made them become key building blocks in the design of new metallo-supramol. architectures and polymers. Functionalized 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine derivs. have been incorporated in a large diversity of architectures, such as block or graft copolymers, chain-extended polymers and metallo-supramol. micelles. The optical and electrochem. properties of such polymeric materials are strongly dependent on the chelating ligand, the complexed metal ions and the counterions. We are interested in the development of more complex terpyridines, including rigid and higher conjugated systems, and their influence on the properties of the materials derived. In this presentation, we show an efficient and general route to synthesize 4'-functionalized terpyridines to be used as building blocks for the construction of novel functional supramol. materials. The main features of this approach are the comparably short reaction times and the environmentally-friendly reaction conditions (PEG300 as solvent, no excess of inorg. salts). [on SciFinder (R)]
