N2 - Supramol. assembly has become a powerful tool in the synthesis of materials for a host of applications. Polymer chemists, in particular, have adopted non-covalent interactions as a synthetic tool despite the fact that most information about the strength and specificity of binding between mol. recognition groups was collected in soln. Therefore, a simple model system was chosen to allow the phys. understanding of supramol. binding in a polymer melt. The system consists of homopolymers that are end-functionalized with a quadruple hydrogen-bonding mol. recognition group (2-ureido-4[1H]pyrimidinone, UPy, or 2,7-diamido-1,8-naphthyridine, Napy), which, when blended, form a reversibly-bonded block copolymer. This presentation will discuss the synthesis of end-functional polymers with complimentary H-bonding groups coupled with the thin film behavior of these supramol. block copolymer systems.
