Synthesis and characterization of poly(3-hexylthiophene)-polyethylene block copolymers

Samenvatting

The synthesis of block copolymers consisting of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and polyethylene is reported. The synthetic route to these polymers occurs through a vinyl end-capped P3HT which is then used as a chain transfer agent in a ring opening metathesis polymn. (ROMP) with cis-cyclooctene and Grubbs' second generation catalyst. Using this methodol. we were able to control the P3HT wt. percentages in the target copolymers by varying the initial ratio of P3HT and cis-cyclooctene in the reactions. To our knowledge, the prepd. copolymers constitute some of the first cryst.-cryst. copolymers with a semiconducting component. The prepd. polymers were subjected to initial thermal anal. and we found a linear relation between the P3HT wt. percentage of the polymers and the crystn. enthalpy of the polyethylene in the differential scanning calorimetry traces indicating that the crystallinity of the blocks is not disrupted upon incorporating them into a copolymer. Further anal. of these polymers is ongoing.
