Samenvatting
This paper presents the design and structural analysis of a monumental ice sculpture created by the renowned artist KAWS, featuring his iconic "Companion" characters. Executed by the authors during the winter of 2021-2022, the sculpture, standing at a height of 13 meters, incorporates an internal steel framework, for supporting Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) and cellulose ice components.
Structural behaviour analysis was conducted using ABAQUS FEA software, with two simulations evaluating the load-bearing capacity of the FRP layer independently and considering a 5 cm cellulose ice layer. Results revealed significant reductions in displacements and stresses with the addition of cellulose ice, ensuring the sculpture's structural integrity under various load conditions. However, remaining critical areas and potential slippage between the FRP and ice layers temper these positive findings.
The construction process faced environmental challenges in the Changbai Mountains, requiring innovative solutions to counter unexpected warmth and soil softening.
This study contributes valuable insights into designing and constructing monumental ice sculptures in challenging environments.
