Samenvatting

In conventional sintering procedures a relatively long period of time is necessary to reach the desired temperature. During this time the density of the material as well as the grain size will increase. These effects can be separated by sintering using a fast firing process. Under these circumstances the sintering temperature is reached in such a short time, that grain growth is minimized. The influence of the effects mentioned was investigated by studying the sintering behaviour of undoped Yttrium Aluminium Gamet (YAG, Y3Al5O12) ceramics in a high frequency field. The results were compared for three different methods of preparing a pellet, viz. by uniaxial pressing of YAG sulphate precursor or YAG powder, and by slipcasting a YAG powder suspension. It was shown that for the slipcasted pellets full densification (> 99%) and translucency could be obtained during sintering at 1700 °C in less than 10 minutes.
