Designing and manufacturing the physical machine nowadays is generally based on computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM). Modelling and simulating the machine allows the designer to test the machine for mechanical and dynamical performance before the machine is actually produced (CAD). Furthermore, reusing the digitally stored data from the design process facilitates and improves the manufacturing process (CAM). A similar line of thought can be applied to the design of the machine control. Modelling and simulating the machine and its control system allows the designer to test and improve the machine control before it actually is implemented, possibly even before the machine is available. Reusing the digitally stored information from the design process can both facilitate and improve the implementation process. The purpose of the paper is to present preliminary results of a project concerned with the development of a framework for simulation based design of machine control systems.
