Samenvatting

To increase insight in the behaviour of non-reinforced sandwich panels with openings, experiments, finite element simulations and analytical models have been developed and compared. Analytical models have been developed to determine the global deformations of sandwich panels without cracks. These models are based on Timoshenko-beams and solutions are obtained based on closed form solutions and the matrix method. Two dimensional numerical simulations lead to stress concentration factors, which are used to obtain peak bending stresses in the faces at the corners of the opening in panels which are loaded by bending. The results of the analytical models and two dimensional numerical simulations are comparable with the results of a complete three dimensional FE model of a sandwich panel which is loaded by bending. Experiments comprise a modified Nordtest [5] that show that the chipboard, used for panel faces, does not fail but shows (safe) softening. With the help of the energy balance, the behaviour of panels with cracks can be determined.
