The use of renewable energy sources for the transition towards a sustainable electricity system imposes a number of new challenges for the grid, one of them being the balancing of variable output supply and demand. The flexibility of production and consumption in Virtual Power Plants can be used within a Smart Grid to dampen this intermittent behaviour of wind and solar energy. In the EU-FP7 project Web2Energy, an industrial virtual power plant has been created that shifts its electricity demand and production to provide this regulating power for system balancing.
