One design process for both unlisted and listed buildings

This paper aims to present the results of a case study research; undertaken during the doctoral research RE-ARCHITECTURE: Lifespan rehabilitation of built heritage; and to raise discussion on the proposal of one design process for both unlisted and listed buildings, in rehabilitation interventions. A truthful comparison between two architectural offices, acknowledged by their lifespan consciousness, has shown that design processes and required procedures are not that different in the Netherlands and Portugal. They mostly differ between listed and unlisted buildings. Instead, architects who act lifespan consciously do not make this distinction. They consider them valuable on their particular distinctiveness. Therefore, even if legislation does not yet perceive them equally in what regards interventions, there are enough foundations to sustain one design process for both unlisted and listed buildings. A design process that proposes to comply with the needs of all buildings and to decrease the amplitude between their respective interventions.
