Our world’s cultural heritage is under constant threat from its environment. Salts are widely recognized as a major cause of the loss of many historical objects, such as statues, buildings and other artworks. While a porous material is drying, salt crystallization may occur at the surface (efflorescence) resulting in visual damage or just below the surface (subfiuorescence), where it may cause structural damages, for example, delamination, surface chipping or disintegration, with consequent loss of detail. Many contemporary buildings and civil constructions also suffer from salt-induced damage processes. Salt weathering can therefore be considered as a common hazard with significant cultural and economic implications. Hence, a detailed knowledge of moisture and salt transport is essential for understanding the durability of these materials.
