Modelling the behaviour of high density tropical hardwood species loaded perpendicular to grain

    In The Netherlands only certified (FSC) tropical hardwoods are allowed for application in structures.
    High density hardwood species still find application in many marine structures such as locks, quays, bridges for pedestrians and cyclists. Experimental and FEM research has been carried out to find reasons for the observed failure modes and subsequent difference in behaviour. It appears that the direction of the annual rings is of more importance for the behaviour compared to coniferous wood species. Rolling shear is a failure mode than only occurs in softwoods with high aspect ratio (width to depth ratio) but limits the compressive capacity considerably for high density tropical hardwood species. The failure modes that occur in testing according to the standard EN408 to determine the standard compressive strength perpendicular to grain, is taken as a starting point. The non-linear 2D FEM modelling shows that rolling shear combined with the orientation of the annual ring of the specimen is of great influence.
