Samenvatting

Industrial processes often involve structure development such as phase separation, coalescence, break-up. Such processes are controlled by the fi??nite range of molecular interactions, which is closely related to the interfacial thickness. Thermodynamically, this fi??nite interaction range is represented by non-local e??ffects in the free energy of the system. In this paper we use a di??ffuse-interface model, which includes these non-local eff??ects, to describe structure development during flow. Results are obtained for nucleation, coalescence an break-up in an external force ??field. Coalescence is investigated in more detail, considering the sharp-interface limit.
