Samenvatting
Since the bandwidth of large-core step-index (SI) polymer optical fiber (POF) is quite limited, Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) is considered to increase the channel capacity. Using two different low-cost LEDs at 460nm and 520nm wavelength, the in-phase and quadrature-phase signals of the QAM signal are transmitted. The two wavelength signals are multiplexed and demultiplexed with bulk optics consisting of lenses and single-edge dichroic filters with an edge wavelength of 495 nm, just between the wavelengths of the LEDs. Using 16-QAM modulation, 100 Mbit/s over 150 m of 1 mm core diameter SI PMMA POF has been realized. The wavelengths of 460nm (blue) and 520nm (green) have been chosen because of the low attenuation of the PMMA POF and the availability of suitable LEDs. Using higher power LEDs or better lenses with lower aberrations, the transmission distance can be increased further.
