N2 - Where to begin when designing a wind turbine system? This question is answered in this report
this report contains a brief description of how to model a wind turbine control system from the start.
The model described here is based on a non-linear model from a paper.
This report starts with some basic information about wind turbine systems, from a description of
components to an explanation of dierent wind turbine types. In the second chapter important
background information to control a variable-speed, variable-pitch wind turbine is discussed. After
a description of all concepts a non-linear model will be presented in chapter three. Furthermore,
this chapter contains the theoretical steps to linearize the model as also an explanation of how
to implement the linearized model in Matlab. Last but not least dierent PID-tuning methods are
explained, implemented and compared in chapter four. Since the model consists of more than one
input and more than one output it is possible to control the system for dierent in- and output
combinations. Therefore, a comparison of some possibilities is also given in this nal chapter.
Since this report is an introduction to wind-turbine control a simplied model is described (some
features are left behind in the example). After reading this report one will be able to reproduce
the modeling of a (simplied or extended) wind turbine system, as to use basic tuning methods.
Furthermore this report is usable as educational background information.
