Hydrogen content and graphitization of carbonaceous deposits on noble metals and alloys studied with secondary ion mass spectrometry

    Samenvatting

    Carbonaceous deposits formed from ethylene at 325, 525 and 775 K on Pt, Ir, Rh, PtRh and PtIr have been investigated with SIMS and AES. Negative SIMS spectra are very sensitive for the state of the deposit. It is argued that the intense negative hydrocarbon ions in SIMS are formed by reactions between ions and neutral species. Carbonaceous deposits formed between 500 and 800 K are relatively hydrogen—rich on Ir, graphitic on Pt and depleted in hydrogen on Rh. Alloying of Pt with Ir increases the hydrogen content and decreases the graphitization of the carbon, alloying of Pt with Rh has less effect.
