The action of the doping agents, used for improving the properties of W at temps. >1500 Deg, is not yet well understood. The 3 principal hypotheses attempting to explain it are that the dopant arranges itself in strings parallel to the wire axis, that the dopant dissolves in the lattice, or that the voids caused by vaporization of the dopant hinders radial grain growth.
