Samenvatting
Ankara, planned in the first years of the Republic and attracted attention with the density of open and green areas in the city center, could not keep a large part of these areas in the last century. Having made visible the losses of green areas that existed during that period, this study discusses the discourses and promises on “the future” put forward by various actors regarding increasing the green in the city over “the futures that could/do not come yet”. On the way of
putting forward the changes/transformations of open and green areas in the city, the research refers to aerial photographs used as a source to determine the existing structural situation of the period, newspaper archives, and journals that have the potential to reveal the current discussion grounds. It claims that the areas traced are perceived as “buildable”/”empty spaces” that can host new constructions in the city in almost every period. In conclusion, to change the perception of “empty space” directed to green areas in shaping the future of Ankara, it proposes to generate a ground that would increase the relationship between the actors - academia, local government, urbanite-; and it underlines that education is the crucial dynamic that would transform the understanding of open and green areas.
