Samenvatting

Light (esp. C>1) hydrocarbons are produced from CH4 by (1) decompn. of CH4 at ?600 Deg on a metal oxide-supported Group VIIA or Group VIII metal catalyst, to form a reactive carbonaceous deposit, followed by (2) hydrogenation of the carbonaceous deposit at ?250 Deg, most preferably ?100 Deg. Suitable metal catalysts, which are present at 0.1-30% (preferably 0.5-15%) on the support, are Ru, Ir, Re, Ni, Co, or Pt, which are suitably supported on metal silicates or phosphates, preferably SiO2, Al2O3, or SiO2-Al2O3, optionally contg. MgO, ZrO2, or TiO2 promoters. A He flow, contg. 0.5 vol.% CH4, was passed over a 10% Co/Al2O3 catalyst at 461 Deg in a 3-min pulsed flow to yield a catalyst contg. reactive carbonaceous deposits. After rapid cooling of the catalyst (within 100 s to
