Fibre Bragg grating sensors for acoustic sensing

    The feasibility of fibre Bragg grating (FBG) based fibre-optic sensing concepts for acoustic
    sensing in oil and gas wells has been studied. Based on a fibre-laser (FL) implementation, a prototype interrogator has been realised.
    Laboratory tests indicate an interesting noise floor performance: lower than the noise floor of currently used Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology and with a potential to achieve a noise floor of 5 pε/√Hz in a 5Hz-5000Hz range. The distortion is less than 2% for strain signals up to 65 nε, a typical maximum strain signal in the considered applications.
    An additional advantage of this point-sensing concept is its lower costs compared to DAS for permanent monitoring with a dedicated interrogator, in cases which require less than 120 sensing locations.
    This development indicates a potentially interesting acoustic point-sensing concept. A field trial of the prototype interrogator has been planned in Schoonebeek, with the aim to evaluate its performance further.
