    Samenvatting

The concept of fitting lifting surfaces (tip vane augmenters) to the rotor tip of horizontal axis wind turbines, pioneered by van Holten, has recently been the subject of detailed experimental study, supported by theoretical modelling. Dimensional data for two types of tip vane and design of a new rotor were provided using predictive models developed by TH Delft, for Cranfield to design a tip vane rotor for fitting to a 2m. diameter model turbine. The unit has been tested in a large open jet wind tunnel, and in the concluding stages, the large area return section of a closed section tunnel; the results from the closed tunnel test are described here.
