Samenvatting

A model was developed to calculate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for readout of short-wavelength bit patterns on disk using tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) and giant magnetoresistance (GMR) based yoke-type read heads. Focusing on head efficiency, it was shown that, in contrast to yoke-type read heads based on anisotropic or giant MR elements, TMR-based yoke type heads can have a very high efficiency, because one of the electrodes of the TMR element can be in direct electrical and magnetic contact with the yoke.
