A numerical study of the effects of shrinkage and stresses on drying kinetics was performed. A diffusional model was used, taking into account the deformation of the solid. The materials studied were a medium-shrinkage clay and a highly shrinking gel. Different assumptions for the type of shrinkage were presented (e.g., unidirectional shrinkage, isotropic shrinkage, and no shrinkage). The effects of stresses on moisture transport were studied by assuming local isotropic shrinkage. Two-dimensional plane stress problems with an elastic constitutive model were used. Various dependencies of Young's module and Poisson ratio vs. moisture content were tested. The mech. problem can be neglected if the only interest is in drying kinetics, but for a prediction of the evolution of the body shape during drying, the mech. problem is essential.
