The present invention relates to a drug delivery device for implantation in a mammalian body comprising a thermo-sensitive polymeric material, a pharmaceutically or biol. active component and an IR absorbing compd. The present invention also relates to a method for releasing an active compd. from a drug delivery device, the drug delivery device comprising a thermosensitive polymeric material, a pharmaceutically or biol. active component and an IR absorbing compd., wherein the drug delivery device is exposed to IR irradn. thereby crossing a phase transition. Thus, a pressed circular disk with a diam. of 2.5 cm and thickness of 0.8 mm, consisting of poly(methyl)methacrylate in which 290 ppm of a Lumogen IR 765 was dissolved, exhibiting an absorbance of 2.9 a.u. at a wavelength of 785 nm, was mounted in a holder in air at 20C. The disk was irradiated perpendicularly to the surface with a laser diode module, the laser power being 400 mW and the distance between fiber exit and disk 45 mm; a max. surface temp. rise of 58C was reached within 2 min of irradn., after which the temp. remained const.
