Samenvatting

This chapter explores the relationship between developments in the electricity and digitalization systems in the European Union (EU) from a sustainability perspective. The increased use of digital technologies in the electricity system has major consequences. On one hand, these are technological: to mitigate climate change and support the decarbonization of the electricity system, there is a growing inclusion of renewable energy sources and flexibility capacity, resulting in a more decentralized electricity system, with new infrastructural and management challenges. On the other hand, the consequences are of social nature: new actors can become active in the electricity system, and different social issues emerge, for example regarding safety or equality. Both types of consequences require appropriate governance. This chapter discusses how a just transition is possible with regards to digitalization and decarbonisation of the EU electricity system.
