Designing with Data, Data-Enabled and Data-Driven Design

More complex applications across domains require more complex ways of exploring and discovering user needs. Increasingly, designers use data to scale up, provide evidence, communicate and drive data-* processes and products. Data-enabled design is an approach to harness the fluent use of data in conceptual, early-stage design processes with a focus on understanding contexts and complex user needs as well as taking direct designerly action on documented needs and requirements. In this chapter, we give an overview of dataful approaches to design and then focus on data-enabled design with links to literature and application examples. Following this, we outline important qualities, scopes, and roles in data-enabled design and briefly touch on ongoing research to extend and scale it in academic, clinical, and industrial contexts.
