A new route for the prodn. of high modulus and strength, crosslinked ultra-high mol. wt. polyethylene (UHMWPE) structures was explored. Trans-1,4-polybutadiene (I) is added to UHMWPE, prior to dissoln. and ultra-drawing, to enhance the crosslinking efficiency of drawn tapes upon electron-beam irradn. Undrawn soln.-cast films exhibit a 2-phase structure consisting of a continuous UHMWPE phase and dispersed I domains. Upon drawing, the I phase is deformed to elongated domains with a width of a few nanometers, and both the UHMWPE and I phase are highly oriented. The addn. of I indeed enhances the crosslinking efficiency of drawn, oriented UHMWPE tapes. Tapes with a high gel fraction (>95%) and improved high-temp. resistance could be produced
