Samenvatting

Composition measurements of T1CIX deposited by chemical vapour deposition show a very restricted range of composition. Additionally, lattice constant measurements vs. composition of TiC ~ shows a maximum value at a composition of about 45 at. % titanium. An explanation of these two phenomena is presented, based on X-ray photo electron spectroscopy and soft X-ray spectroscopy results, and on thermo dynamic data. This has important implications in CVD practice TiC. The explanation presented could also be applicable to ZrC-~ and HfC
