Cognitive ergonomics lessons: possible challenges for USI?

IPO, Center for User-System Interaction is in the process of extending its traditional research in human perception and cognition, to include user-system interaction (USI). Cognitive Ergonomics (CE) attempted a similar extension 20 years ago. Since USI and CE have much in common, it may therefore be instructive for IPO research programmes to consider the lessons learned by CE and those remaining to be learned, as possible challenges for USI. To facilitate such consideration, this paper reviews the past, present, and future of CE as a discipline. The past, and in particular its shortcomings, is characterized in terms of an earlier description offered by Long (1987). The present is characterized in terms of the lessons assumed to have been learned by CE, since that publication. The future is characterized in terms of lessons which still remain to be learned. Possible challenges for USI are identified for all CE lessons. Last, the paper raises some general issues concerning CE and USI.
