Samenvatting

The presence of chlorides in the Municipal Solid Waste Incineration bottom ashes (BA) hinders their potential for recycling in building materials. The contaminant content in the incineration residues is strictly regulated by the Dutch legislation Soil Quality Decree (2013). The fine fraction (particles ≤ 4 mm) of bottom ash is considered to be especially rich in contaminants. The utilization of this fraction into concrete faces challenges because of their negative environmental impact and ability to accelerate the corrosion of steel in reinforced building materials. In this study, an in-depth investigation was performed to understand the leaching mechanisms of chloride species in order to produce a recyclable fraction of BA.
