Samenvatting

The carbothermal reduction of kaolin is a well known method to prepare ß-sialon from inexpensive starting materials. So far however, hardly any attention has been paid to carbothermai production of a-sialons. In this study kaolin, diatomite powder. SiO2, Al2O3. several Ca-sources and carbon black were used. These materials were mixed, slip cast or pressed and heated in nitrogen at 1350 -1450°C. Next the samples were annealed at 1550, 1625 and 1700°C to form a single phase Ca-a-sialon material. In this way up till 90 % purity was reached.
