Samenvatting

Future ultra-fast and high-capacity all-optical packet switches can benefit from versatile all-optical buffering strategies to achieve higher performance. This paper reports two buffering configurations for an All-Optical Label Swapping (AOLS) packet switch. They are (1) output-buffering, where packets are queued in a separate fibre delay line (FDL) at each output of the switch; (2) input-buffering, where a separate buffer is provided for each input to the switch. Through simulation, we will analyze the performance of these buffering schemes in terms of packet loss ratio and network throughput for different traffic models.
