Reconfigurability is essential for an efficient optical access network because user demands highly vary on place and time. A new reconfigurable optical access network architecture based on an SOA array named active routing optical access network (ARON) is proposed to provide bandwidth-on-demand to end-users. ARON remote node is able to dynamically allocate an wavelength with appropriate bandwidth to an end-user depending on its instantaneous traffic. This is realized by using an SOA array controlled remotely from the OLT. Upstream seeding wavelength generated at OLT simultaneously routed with downstream wavelength allows the use of a simple but colorless ONU. To evaluate the performance, 2.5 Gbps over 70km transmission experiment is demonstrated, in which 7ns wavelength provisioning time and error-free transmission with only 0.5 dB power penalty is achieved.
