Arbitrary Ratio Power Splitters Using Bent MultiMode Interferometers

In this paper, we propose power splitters based on bent 2 x 2 MultiMode Interferometers (MMIs) with arbitrary power splitting ratio. We show that the power splitting ratio can be continuously selected from the initial ratio of 50/50 to 80/20 with losses below 4.7% (0.2dB) or to 70/30 with losses below 2.3% (0.1dB) by changing the bending radius of the MMI. The corresponding bending angle is so small that the footprint of the bent device does not deviates significantly from that of the straight device. We also study the tolerance of the devices for variation of lengths, and in the wavelength range 1405–1495 nm, showing that for lengths variations within ±2μm and in the C band the devices maintain such performance. These devices are valuable for applications where a low-loss tailored power splitter is required.
