Samenvatting

Universities worldwide are using and developing Challenge Based Learning (CBL) as a new educational concept, especially in engineering education. Here, students work in groups on their own, very open projects within themes owned by external stakeholders and aligned with the big challenges of today's society. Because CBL is an open and interdisciplinary learning environment, students must use and develop self-direction. AIMION is a tangible tool to support students, teams and their coaches in their projects, individual learning and self-direction. This article describes how the initial tool (Veelenturf [1]) was further developed using an educational design methodology that included 3 rounds in which (re)design and evaluation of classroom use alternated. The three pilots conducted are briefly described and the successive implications for the tool’s design are presented. Finally, conclusions are drawn about critical features of AIMIION (especially the latest version), important rules for successful implementation
and use, and the main qualities and effectiveness of AIMION.
