Admisson planning is an important area of planning hospital operations for elective patients that do not need emergency care. Its purpose is not only to admit patients according to medical priority but also to take into consideration the resource use of admitted patients in order to balance the workload of departments along product lines. Admission planning will be further elaborated and an integer linear programming model will be developed that can be used by hospitals to balance the workload of admissions by taking into account the resource requirements of different patient categories within a specialty. An application in a hospital will be used to illustrate principles of planning and the results obtained.
