A model is presented in which the motion of a polymer in a concentrated solution or melt is represented by the reptating motion of a flexible elastic rope in a tube under the influence of Brownian, elastic and frictional forces. In this model the results of Doi and Edwards [l] and of Curtiss and Bird [2] are obtained as special cases. In fast processes the elasticity of the rope may give rise to an important contribution to the stress tensor.
