A comparison is made between three linear, dynamic tyre models using low speed step responses and yaw oscillation tests. The match with the measurements improves with increasing complexity of the tyre model. Application of the different tyre models to a two degree of freedom trailing arm suspension shows that shimmy stability can be very dependent on the tyre model selected. Using a too simple representation of the tyre behaviour could lead to incorrect conclusions regarding shimmy stability. It is also clear that using a detailed tyre model requires many parameters, which may be difficult to obtain.
