Samenvatting
We report 1.25 Gb/s error-free transmission over 25 m of standard 1 mm core diameter step-index PMMA POF by only simple means to improve bandwidth. The experiment is carried out with a 658 nm laser diode for DVD applications and a Si PIN photodiode. By launching a collimated beam into the POF and spatially filtering out the higher order modes with a 200 µm diameter photodiode followed by a transimpedance amplifier, such high data rates can be achieved. This result shows the potential of 1 mm step-index PMMA POF as a simple and cost-effective solution to support broadband technologies like Gigabit Ethernet. By using more advanced transmission schemes, one could more fully exploit the capacity of large-core PMMA POF and extend the range to even larger distances.
