Imagine: It is 2030, you walk into your favorite supermarket. The tomatoes you buy have been grown – off-season – with minimized energy consumption using an active lighting system which adapts itself to the plant growth. Their riping and freshness have been monitored throughout the distribution process, and you can check their nutritional value yourself with the spectral scanner integrated in your smartphone. A few thousands of km south, crop efficiency improvements have resulted in sufficient calorie intake for everyone, and the quality of drinking water is monitored continuously. This project aims at contributing to the realization of these dreams by making cheap and miniaturized photonic sensors available to everyone, everywhere
