Research profile

The project Membrane development for large-scale hydrogen-bromine flow batteries focuses on the understanding of the membrane transport mechanisms in HBFB in the presence of the reactants. Available membranes are characterized in terms of e.g. open circuit voltage, voltage-current behavior, proton transport and bromine cross over. Also the performance and stability of commercial membranes in HBFB technology are assessed, both in short-term and long-term tests. Based on the characterization results and the performance data, structure-properties relationships are identified and critical membrane properties and directions for membrane optimization are selected and performed. Finally, in cooperation with suppliers and end users, application research is conducted to fine-tune the membrane performance in commercial HBFB systems.
