The ability to predict and influence the microstructure development is an essential step for controlling the mechanical properties of immiscible polymer blends.
Wing-Hin Wong is a doctoral candidate in the Polymer Technology group at the Eindhoven University of Technology. His research focuses on phenomenological and computational modelling of the microstructure development of droplet-in-matrix polymer blends in complex geometries. A typical industrial example of complex geometries is a twin-screw extruder. Developing a quantitative model for the structure development reduces the need for configuring the extruder through trial-and-error. The aim is to quantify how the droplet structure evolves through deformation, breakup and coalescence resulting from shear and elongation caused by the flow field. Topics of interest are the influence of flow history, material properties and initial droplet size distribution.
Wing-Hin Wong obtained his BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the Eindhoven University of Technology in 2012. He continued his MSc in Mechanical Engineering, with a specialization in fluid mechanics and numerical modelling in the Multiscale Engineering Fluid Dynamics group of prof. Harald van Brummelen. He graduated with his thesis titled "Improving the condition number of the Finite Cell Method using mesh refinement" in 2015. To further pursue his interest in fluid mechanics and numerical modelling, he entered the PhD program in the Polymer Technology group, under the supervision of prof. Patrick Anderson and dr. Martien Hulsen.
