Research profile

Twan van Hooff is an Associate Professor in the Building Physics research group of the Unit Building Physics and Services (BPS) in the Department of the Built Environment at TU/e, and chairman of the Unit BPS since 2021. Twan’s areas of expertise include the experimental modeling and numerical simulation of ventilation flows, including related heat and mass transfer processes, with the overall aim to provide healthy, comfortable and energy-efficient buildings and other enclosures. His research topics cover, amongst other areas, building and room ventilation, natural ventilation, pedestrian-level wind comfort, sport stadium aerodynamics, computational fluid dynamics for the built environment and climate change adaptation measures on the building scale.

Academic background

Twan van Hooff received his MSc in Architecture, Building and Planning in 2008, with a specialization in Building Physics (track ‘Physics of the Built Environment’). From July 2008 to July 2012, he was a PhD student at both the Building Physics and Services (BPS) at TU/e and the Building Physics Section of KU Leuven, Belgium (double doctorate supervised by prof.dr.ir. Blocken (TU/e) and prof.dr.ir. Baelmans (KUL)). In December 2012 he obtained his PhD (at TU/e with honors). For a publication not related to his PhD study, Twan received the Best Paper Award from the leading ISI journal Building and Environment (2011).

From 2012 to 2014 Twan was a postdoctoral researcher in the Climate Proof Cities research program. From October 2014 until September 2020, Twan was a Research Fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) (personal grant) in the Building Physics Section of the Department of Civil Engineering at KU Leuven. From October 2015 he was an assistant professor in the unit Building Physics and Services of the Department of the Built Environment at Eindhoven University of Technology and from April 2020 he is an associate professor in the same group (full time from October 2020), focusing on building ventilation. Since May 2021 he is also chairman of the Unit Building Physics and Services. He has published 60 ISI journal papers, 18 of which as first author, and 90 papers in international conference proceedings so far. He is editorial board member of the Journal of Building Physics and the Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, is reviewer for 56 ISI journals and has been a member of more than 10 scientific committees at international conferences.
