Quote

“I aim to help students become critical independent thinkers by encouraging and challenging them, while creating an environment that fosters interaction, communication, and growth.”

Research profile

Sukanya Krishnamurthy is currently an assistant professor at the Chair of Urbanism and Urban Architecture (Faculty of the Built Environment) at Eindhoven University of Technology.  Her interests lie at the interface of urban, social and cultural geography, where her scholarship focuses on the various narratives that can be read through architecture within the multidisciplinary milieu of the contemporary city. These include a wide range of subjects: urban morphology, placemaking, participatory planning, informality in the city, and interdisciplinary methods of research. Research in Urbanism and Architecture focuses on exploring various interdisciplinary research methods within the fields of architecture and urbanism. The emergence, development and continual transformation of cities in relation to changing configurations of urbanization and myriad socio-spatial struggles are explored, drawing from an interdisciplinary literature ranging from planning and urban theory, and history, and the urban social sciences.

Academic background

Sukanya trained as an architect and urbanist in India and Germany, and received her PhD in Urban Studies and Architecture from Bauhaus University (Germany) in 2012. Her doctoral thesis investigates the relationship architecture/ physical form has with various social process within an urban environment. Prior to joining the Chair of Urbanism and Urban Architecture at the TU/e she spent her graduate studies and professional life working as an architect, designer, lecturer and researcher. In Bangalore (India) she worked as an architect with Mindspace in 2006-07. She also worked as a researcher in Aachen, Dessau, Weimar (Germany, 2007-12) and in Toronto (Canada, 2012-14), where she worked for The Neptis Foundation, a nonpartisan, urban research foundation in Toronto, Canada.
