The large-scale production of green hydrogen, crucial for the energy transition, requires a completely new type of electrolyser with higher efficiency, lower cost, and a circular design. NXTGEN HIGHTECH 3rd electrolyzer project, led by TNO, a consortium of technical universities and private-sector companies will spend the next few years devising and developing a radical new design.

The third generation involves exploring all current technologies based on water splitting (PEM, alkaline, SOE, AEM) in conjunction, with CO2 electrolysis as a newcomer. With an emphasis on Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE), AWE is a well-established technology for hydrogen production. However, one of the challenges of nickel electrode is the low electrocatalytic activity in alkaline environment. To improve the performance, development of high surface area nickel (Raney-Ni) coating on Ni-substrate is expected to improve electrochemical activity for alkaline water electrolysis. The new electrolysers will have to deliver significantly better performance, use much less energy and materials, and be cheaper.
