Research profile

Sha Lou's current research project is a joint project between the group of Professor Carlijn Bouten - Soft Tissue Engineering & Mechanobiology group, and the group of Professor Jaap den Toonder – Microsystems in Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The project was funded by "RegMed-XB Kidney Moonshot" and the goal is to mimic the kidney functioning unit – the nephron by using the platform of "organ-on-chip (OOC)". More specifically, a microfluidics enabled bioreactor in which a physiologically-alike renal tubule-blood capillary interplay mode will be firstly fabricated and then the microfluidic mechanical bioinfluence on cell morphology and cell function will be focused on. During the project, different OOC fabrication techniques will be optimized to achieve the requirements of 3D geometry, flexibility in diameter control and fine feature (with diameter of around 50 micron) creation; different biomaterials as extracellular matrix will be investigated as well. Through this project, Lou is interested to see what cells produce and how their behavior change under the well-controlled flow in microsystem.

Academic background

Sha Lou got her master degree in China in Peking Union Medical College, major in biotechnology. She spent one year working on “gold nanoparticle-based immunochromatographic assay” in Chinese Academy of Sciences before she started her PhD. In 2017 she received her PhD degree from Leiden University, major in life science – medicine; during her PhD time she won the “Young Investigator” grant from an international conference and the “Best post prize” from another conference presentation. Since January 2019, she worked as a postdoc in TU/e for the joint project of “Kidney-on-chip” under the supervision of Professor Carlijn Bouten and Professor Jaap den Toonder.
