Academic background

Sahel Abdinia received her master's degree in Electrical Engineering from KNT University in Tehran, Iran. She was awarded a PhD degree at Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE) in 2014, where she carried research on circuit design using complementary organic transistors. Subsequently, she worked as a circuit designer on biomedical applications based on emerging technologies, in Philips Research and Medtronic Eindhoven Design Center (MEDC). Since December 2016, she holds an assistant professorship position in Mixed-signal Microelectronics group at TUE. Her research is focused on mixed-signal circuit design using emerging technologies such as organic and IGZO thin-film transistors, and, most recently, on electronics for flexible and wearable biomedical applications.

Research profile

Sahel Abdinia's research is focused on technology-aware circuit design using emerging technologies, including organic and Indium-Gallium-Zinc-Oxide (IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) on plastic foils. She explores applications that take advantage of integration of circuits on flexible substrates, for example biomedical wearable devices, characterized by mechanical flexibility, conformability, large area and low cost. Examples include large area sensor matrices for surface EMG and low-cost RFID tags for tracking retailer packages. For this purpose, within the Emerging Technologies and Applications Lab at MsM, she carries out research taking into account the challenges of circuit design in different technologies on foil, including lack of complementary transistors, large parametric variations and defects, low TFT performance, large parasitics, etc.
